La Yemaa
Islamiya, una organización vinculada a Al Qaeda, que cuenta con
unos 200 miembros y aspira a formar un Estado islámico que integre
Malasia, Singapur, Indonesia y Filipinas, fue la Responsable de la masacre
que causó cerca de 300 muertos el 12 de octubre de 2002 en la
isla indonesia de Bali. El desarrollo de las investigaciones confirmó
que la Yemaa Islamiya estaba detrás del atentado. Su líder
espiritual es el clérigo indonesio Abu Bakar Bashir, a quien
Estados Unidos incluye en su lista de terroristas internacionales.
Conocida como JI (por sus siglas en inglés), la Yemaa Islamiya
ya planeó un ataque con bombas contra la embajada de Australia
y otros objetivos occidentales en Singapur, en diciembre de 2001. Las
autoridades singapurenses frustraron el intento de atentado y anunciaron
la detención de 21 presuntos miembros del grupo. “La JI
quiere usar el terrorismo para debilitar la legitimidad de los gobiernos
que desea suplantar”, dijo el ministro de Defensa australiano,
Robert Hill, en septiembre de 2002. Rohan Gunaratna, autor del estudio
‘Inside Al Qaeda’ sobre la red responsable de los atentados
del 11-S, sostiene que el ataque de Bali iba dirigido contra ciudadanos
australianos y de otras nacionalidades occidentales.

The development of the investigations confirmed that the Yemaa Islamiya was behind the attack. Its spiritual lider is the Indonesian clergyman Abu Bakar Bashir, who was included in the list of International terrorists of United States. Known as JI, the Yemaa Islamiya has already planned a bomb attack against the Australian Embassy and others occidentals objectives in Singapore, on Dicember of 2001. The authorities of Singapore frustrated the attempted attack and anounced the detention of 21 presunts members of the group. “The JI wants to use the terrorism to debilitate the legitimity of the governments that they wish to replace”, the Ministry of Defence of Australia, Robert Hill, said in September of 2002.
